Eco-friendly hotel
It is always good to know that there is an eco-friendly hotel that one can stay at when visiting the Cape Peninsula, and the newly opened De Noordhoek Hotel is a good example of one. The hotel has so many environmental friendly features that it is difficult to recall them all. Just looking at the food and dining areas, the hotel uses organic fresh produce that is bought locally wherever possible, and only free-range eggs are ever used. A pending project embraces participation in the production of an organic vegetable garden in the Farm Village to supply village consumption. Breakfasts at this eco-friendly hotel include a number of options for those who prefer health conscious foods.
The de Noordhoek Hotel promotes local organic wines in addition to supporting wines that contribute a portion of their profits to conservation projects. There are a number of other features in this eco-friendly hotel that are worth mentioning. For example all of the hot water used in the hotel is heated by solar water heating – the first hotel in the Western Cape to do so. The hotel also uses Eskom recommended CFL light globes, which are safely disposed of when necessary. All of the hotel waste is separated into categories and recycled, and kitchen food waste goes to the worm farm in the village. One really lovely feature of this eco-friendly hotel is the garden. It is situated in a central courtyard with an elegant water fountain as the centre feature. What could be more apt for a Peninsula hotel than to have a garden comprised entirely of indigenous fynbos.
