There is little doubt that Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the world’s most spectacular marine drives. Perched on the side of a mountain, the 9 kilometre route twists and turns through a total of 114 curves, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and with stunning views in all directions. The Drive was the pet project of Sir Frederic de Waal, who was the first administrator of the Cape Province. The Drive is one of only three roads leading into the Peninsula, and so is of strategic importance to both local residents and tourism. The Drive is now a toll road, but is presently closed for maintenance. It is expected to open again in late 2009, but will be briefly opened for the Cape Argus/Pick n Pay Cycle Race to be held in early March. The De Noordhoek Hotel can be found at the southern end of the Drive.
