Eco Accommodation
The newly built De Noordhoek Hotel has, without doubt, the best eco accommodation in the Western Cape. Let’s have a look at some of the features. The entire property uses water that is heated by solar power – the first hotel to do so in the region. When it is occasionally necessary to use backup electrical power, a separate meter carefully monitors this. With the exception of a couple of chandeliers, compact fluorescent lights are used throughout the hotel, and these are safely disposed of when used. In fact all of the hotel waste is separated and collected by various local recycling companies. Staff at this eco accommodation hotel all live within ten kilometres of the hotel, and their uniforms are even made from environmentally friendly fabrics.
The accommodation is eco-friendly in several other ways. There are low flow showerheads and dual flush toilets in the hotel. Linen and towel changes are carefully monitored, and guest amenities are environmentally friendly, packaging being recyclable and biodegradable. Everything in this eco accommodation hotel has the good of environment in mind. The art in all rooms and public areas is supplied by local artists and mostly depicts local scenes and activities. The restaurant furniture is made by local SMME using recycled Oregon Pine, whereas firewood used is from local suppliers who are assisting in deforestation of invasive species such as Black Wattle, Blue Gum and Oak. As far as the catering side of the hotel is concerned, we use only free-range eggs, and organic produce is purchased locally wherever possible. Our kitchen food waste is given to a local worm farm in the Noordhoek Farm Village.
